"Reunion: balance and form"
"reunion" took place nov. 16 at Artspace. "balance" by Rachy Cuna, and "form" by me. tito rachy's works were a kamagong base, with steel sheets cut into figures balancing crystal stones. there were different sizes and colors. this work shows how versatile an artist he is. as for me, still doing the same thing. pushing the clay to its limits with simple forms and lively glaze drips. "chain vase" was exhibited for the first time, a piece i made in 1997. "a piece of this..." was exhibited for the first time in its correct placement of pieces. a complete pie... it was a good night with friends, family, and even goldfish. take a look at the pix!

Exhibit at Budji's Gallery
an interesting exhibit which my works were placed within budji's furniture. the pieces are then viewed in their right element, the home. its nice to see the pots blend in with the furniture. its very easy to lose track of where the pots are, because they are seen as a part of the whole setting...

"Bulol" exhibition, Philippine Center New York
this exhibit was the best so far.. also a humbling experience making me realize what is out there that i still need to explore. these works are a cumulation of a years worth of experimenting with philippine clay and ash glazes. my family was there for support, friends came in from differen't states, relatives popped their head in, and walk-ins walked in. it was an honor to have josie natori cut the ribbon and start the exhibition...
we stayed there and manned the show for 2 weeks and got familiar with the city. i donated the "manunggul" to the Philippine Center, which now finds it home in the Consul General's office. i'd like to thank all those who have helped with this production and setting up, you all know who you are and theres so many of you.. all those with whome i got a chance to talk to and know better.. those who promoted the exhibit.. and all those who have my pieces now, for i know they have found a good home.. i'll see you all again December 3, 2007....

Macsabal International Woodfire Festival 2005
The 2005 Macsabal Woodfire Festival was an interesting and fulfilling event. Over 10 countries were represented featuring over 30 potters of different technical skills. We shared ideas, gave advice, criticized, and complemented one another. I have learned how it is important to respect other cultures, just as it is to have faith in your own. I have realized how much i love my culture, and embrace the way of the Filipino. Pottery, like life, promotes growth.. 2005 macsabal was a reminder of how small i am in the world of ceramics; and also taught me that no matter how small you are, you play a major piece of the whole... come and take a journey with me and experience the earth, clay, fire, pots, people, animals, dance, bulol, smoke, mask, fish, bowls, smoke, maucaley, friends, and life...

Mrs. Abueva, myself, Mr. Napoleon Abueva
|
Mr. Napoleon Abueva was our guest of honor. It was a very humbling night exhibiting with Jon Pettyjohn and having Mr. Abueva as our ribbon cutter. First of all i started as an apprentice to Pettyjohn, as i still consider myself his student. A man with great skill who is very generous with his knowledge for the craft. I see him as the "unknown craftsman," a true compliment. If you dont understand, read the book. Sharing a gallery space with him made me take a very serious approach to this exhibition. Mr. Abueva was kind enough to open our show, and now i'm proud to say he owns one of my pieces. The manunggul of all pieces.. Twas a great night, and there will be more to come...

tikbalang.. its a shape of a horseshoe, a meeting point between man and horse. the tikbalang is a filipino folklore creature, half man half horse.. very similar to the sagittarius sign.. very abstract.. tilt your head to the left to get the real picture ;)
|
|
|
manunggul.. modeled after the most important piece in filipino history. it is a burial jar discovered in Palawan by anthropologists. The piece shows the combination of the skill of a craftsman with the touch of an artist. Discovered intact, it stands a symbol of faith.. That we believe in an afterlife. the two figures represent the individual who passed away and the one taking him or her to the next life.. by way of boat.. very powerful, very deep, very beautiful!!!
