Pit Fired Pots

finished works with flashing

Pit Fire, June 2005

a pit, 3 feet deep, 3' wide and 8' long was dug

filled with fine sawdust, about 6 inches at bottom

mixed in some copper and cobalt carbonate with rock salt, which gives some interesting metallic effects

then burnished pots are loaded, starting with the big ones in the center

and wood is stacked on top of the pots

then light the pit

then you unload, the longer you let the pots cool in the pit, the more reds and oranges

then we go to sakura afterwards

Tom Decker workshop

Tom Decker, studio potter from Berkley, California, held a 2-day workshop. He specializes in pit firing and will demonstrate his firing techniques next week. His work is mainly sculptural with a bit of function. Interesting individual... demonstrations included burnishing, wheel, and coiling.. he even made whistles!!!

i enjoyed his lecture, for he emphasized to have fun when you work. the same way you did as a child.. innocent and free. the most interesting part of his lecture was about how he went to Palawan and the rains were quite strong. after this, he made a sculptural piece that was very similar to the Manunggul.. funny thing is that he has never seen or heard of the Palawan based figure.

6th Annual Student Exhibition 2004

Rica Zamora, guest of honor

tito vinci, tita tina, my mom

the colorful Niel Lees

This years student exhibit was better than ever. My mom did the honor of cutting the ribbon during the openning ceremony. The event was well attended, with over 40 students exhibiting their works. The show was so good that i think its time some of them should do one man shows. It was difficult curating due to the number of works submitted. The curator this year was Popi Laudico, along with Jon, Tessy, and myself. Congratulations to the students of the Pettyjohn-Mendoza Pottery School, you have done it again! Till the next time...
